Your Role and Responsibilities
Garage Designers in IBM’s Garage are part of a cross-functional team that delivers a unique client co-creation experience to accelerate client transformation. As part of an entrepreneurial team, you will lead UX and customer/user journey design for prioritized use cases and minimum viable skills (MVS), often reimagining how work is performed. You will synthesize research, client insights and requirements to craft user experiences that connect people in meaningful, enduring ways with products, services, and brands. You will apply information architecture, research, and evaluation in user design. You will facilitate and lead design sessions with clients and IBM team, using contemporary methods and tools. You will connect the dots at both abstract and tactical levels as 50% of role is software focused and 50% is facilitating. An ideal candidate is empathetic, expressive, inquisitive, and divergent.

To be successful in this role you will need to:

  • This is a unique role as you are a Designer leading customer interaction on Design Thinking, UX and UI solution. This may include helping the team draft RFPs answers.
  • Be comfortable framing business solutions around technology
  • Guide the team to think about objectives in a new manner and overcome challenges by creating unique solutions
  • Be highly skilled in both visual and UX design; have excellent written communication and storytelling skills
  • Apply IBM Design Thinking methods, translating requirements into hypotheses, research, and facilitation to uncover emotional connections with products
  • Works in an Agile, collaborative environment to understand stakeholder requirements and ensure that designs address user pain points and serve the users with an elite experience
  • Build and maintain a trusted relationship with cross disciplinary IBM and client teams
  • Work closely with senior leaders, explaining design decisions to build consensus
  • Provide thought leadership among the network of Designers and client stakeholders
  • Turn ideas into reality with a focus on innovation and development of new processes, ways of work, and technology
  • Demonstrate a growth mindset and continuous learning by staying up to date on the latest design tools and methods
  • Apply relevant industry experience to shape solutions
  • Provide support during discussions with prospective clients, help assess design needs for projects, with a senior designer, help to scope and craft design portion of proposals.
  • Upon commencement of engagement, help run design thinking workshops to arrive at minimum viable product (MVP)
  • With input from product management and development, design for the best possible user experience of the MVP, while considering all client objectives and design thinking methods.
  • Assist in pulling together retrospective presentations to document for the client the value-add of design thinking to their specific project.
  • Evangelize design thinking with local team

Required BQs:

  • At least 3 years UX Design with an appreciation of the application of typographic skills, understanding of color and visual hierarchy, iconography, and aesthetics
  • At least 3 years in a client facing role, including workshop facilitation, anticipate client needs, and work with peers and executives to help the client have an excellent experience
  • At least 2 years using design thinking and agile practices beyond software to all levels of business
  • At least 2 years as in a Lead Designer role with the capability of supporting non-designers mentally make their way through new concepts and adjusting techniques to ensure all clients leave with a clear understanding of the value of design and their role in reaching the ideal user experience
  • Proven track record of delightful and innovative designs
  • Imagine and mock-up innovative user experiences
  • Understanding of Lean UX and multi-disciplinary teams
  • Demonstrated skills crafting visions, MVPs, personas, scenarios, concepts, storyboarding and wireframing; Adobe Illustrator, Sketch, InVision [TBC] or other interactive prototyping tools

Preferred Expertise:

  • Experience educating individuals and / or groups in design thinking, capable of observing as non-designers mentally make their way through very new concepts, and ensuring all leave with a clear understanding of the value of design and their role in reaching the ideal user experience
  • At least 3 years in a client facing role, including workshop facilitation to shepherd through the IBM Client Garage methods, anticipate client needs, and work with peers and executives to help the client have an excellent experience
  • Experience designing all manner of software, including applications, web sites, mobile applications, etc.
  • Experience working with developers
  • An understanding of interface and user experience design best practices for web and mobility devices
  • Excellent communication, storytelling, and prototyping skills
  • Ability to conceptualize quickly and present in-progress work for critique
  • Project management capabilities a plus
