The Mobile and Wireless Internet (MWI) group at i2CAT is looking for a senior researcher to lead a Spanish R&D project focused on beyond 5G/6G network technologies to support future Extended Reality (XR) applications and metaverse services. More information on the MWI group can be found here: https://www.i2cat.net/research-topics/mobile-wireless-internet/

XR/Metaverse is one of the critical services envisioned for beyond 5G/6G networks. 3GPP has recognised this need and is developing network extensions to provide better support for XR services (e.g. 3GPP TS 26.118). The selected researcher will coordinate a national project called 6GOPENVERSO-NETWORK (TSI-063000-2021-2) that develops network enhancements for XR applications, including:

  • Development of XR-edge technologies, allowing XR headsets and capture infrastructures to offload critical processing functions towards the network
  • XR bidirectional awareness, allowing the 3GPP network to recognise and appropriately prioritise at different layers the XR traffic
  • Use of sub-THz/THz to implement joint sensing and communication technologies with a focus on XR services

As part of its work in the 6GOPENVERSO-NETWORK project the selected researcher will:

  • Lead and coordinate the technical work from i2CAT in the project
  • Act as the project technical manager coordinating the technical inputs of other partners
  • Act as liasion with the 6GOPENVERSO-SERVICES project, which is a sister national project developing XR services. This project is led by the Media Internet group at i2CAT, with whom the selected researcher is expected to have a close collaboration

As part of its role of senior researcher in the MWI group, the selected candidate is expected to:

  • Be the reference person in terms of XR networking
  • Lead preparation of Horizon Europe proposals related to XR networking
  • Coordinate the work of interns and junior team members
  • Lead paper publications and paper generations
  • Lead development of network prototypes
