Your Role and Responsibilities
IBM Research – Ireland is seeking an experienced research scientist in the field of Optimization and Control Theory.
In this role, you will pursue novel problems in new parameter estimation and ML/DL algorithms for dynamic real-world applications. As a research scientist in IBM Research, you are expected to advance fundamental science and publish in top-tier journals and conferences, while helping to shape new business offerings in cutting-edge scientific and technical areas. Our cross-disciplinary approach to research, coupled with the deep curiosity of our researchers and engineers, offers a unique opportunity to develop your career in scientific and industrial research as part of a world-class research organization.
You should have a strong track-record of impact in applying existing, and designing new parameter estimation methods, for real world applications, and justifying those methods mathematically. IBM Research is a world-wide organization and our team has worked in domains such as molecular simulation, computer vision and optimal knowledge-graph completion. We are seeking top talent with the drive, vision and technical skills required to implement cutting edge solutions from research through to practical systems.
Required Technical and Professional Expertise
- Doctorate Degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Optimization Theory, or a related discipline.
- At least 3 years relevant post-doctoral experience. Experience in roles in academic or industrial research institutions is considered relevant.
- Track record of academic and applied excellence in at least one of the following disciplines: applied mathematics, probability, optimal control, mathematical optimization.
- Ability to work in multi-disciplinary team, especially strong communications and presentation skills.
- Evidence of strong Python skills and experience with ML/DL frameworks through, for example, open-source contributions.
Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise
Experience in some of the following areas:
- Linear algebra in finite and infinite dimensions
- Dynamical systems
- Scientific computing methods for solving differential equations numerically
- Optimization techniques for solving convex problems
- Methods for optimal control
- Probabilistic parameter estimation and inference
- Mathematical foundations of deep learning
- Leadership in the development and submission of successful research proposal
- Technical leadership of multi-disciplinary research projects
- Experience with common industrial programming languages such as Java
