Job description

Your opportunity
Are you interested in digital business and the exciting new business models and technology that is driving our digital economy?

NFTs, disinformation, online harms, infringements online, advertising and ad monetization, e-commerce, data privacy, platform liability, freedom of speech, data, AI, algorithms …..

We are at a global cross-roads as law and policy makers bring in a wave of new laws and regulations aimed at regulating digital businesses. From social media companies, to app stores, search engines and marketplaces; all digital business will be affected.

We are looking for talented and entrepreneurial Internet law and regulation lawyers to join our rapidly expanding team in Deloitte Legal.

This is a new and developing area. Regulating the Internet and technology is the issue of our times. We are looking for ambitious lawyers with an interest in this area and who are keen to progress their careers working in an exciting and fast paced legal team and one that is different. As part of Deloitte, the largest consultancy firm in the World, you will have access to an unparalleled client list and a global network, working closely with colleagues in the broader Internet Regulation Deloitte teams in other service lines to deliver unique market leading services.

Deloitte Legal & Deloitte Internet Regulation
Deloitte Legal is unique: an agile, rapidly-growing business with the resources, international network and client list of a global law firm. Deloitte’s legal practice in the UK is part of the global Deloitte Legal network, which has over 2,500 lawyers in more than 85 jurisdictions. This makes Deloitte Legal one of the largest legal businesses in the world with a global footprint that exceeds that of any traditional firm.

Unlike traditional law firms, we combine legal services and expertise with the broader multidisciplinary expertise of Deloitte to provide holistic/blended consultancy, risk advisory, legal, tax, risk, financial advisory to an unmatched list of clients. You would be part of our global Internet Regulation team, providing multi-disciplinary end to end solutions to our clients.

Deloitte Legal is proud of its innovative “new law” approach. We prioritise and invest in technology and innovation, to deliver high-quality advice as effectively and efficiently as possible, for both our clients and Deloitte people. We provide novel legal services, including legal managed services and legal consultancy.

We encourage consideration of flexible ways of working, both formal and informal arrangements that allow for the best outcomes for our people and our clients. If this opportunity is of interest to you with some flexibility, please do discuss with us.

Your role
Internet Law and Regulation is new and our team reflects that, drawing together like-minded motivated lawyers with expertise across a broad range of issues (content risks, media, advertising, consumer, technology, IP, privacy, litigation etc). The team works for many household-name clients as well as fast-growing companies. We provide advisory, risk as well as contentious/litigation services across the team.

We are on an ambitious growth plan. In the short term we have two posts to fill (0-2 and 2-6 PQE). We are looking for lawyers with relevant experience either in private practise or in-house. Most importantly, because this area is new, we are looking for lawyers who want to develop their careers in this space – rather than expecting you to have experience across the breadth of the topics.

We particularly look for traits such as innovative thinking, curiosity, energy and drive, adaptability, team-orientation and a genuine interest in the area, these clients and our work.

Your work, your choice
At Deloitte we believe the best impact is the value we add, not the hours we sit at our desk. We carefully consider agile ways of working, both formal and informal, that allow for the best impact for our people and our clients. Please speak to your recruiter about the working pattern that works best for you.

Location: Your home office will be London.

Work pattern: This is a permanent contract opportunity. The role can be worked on a full-time basis.

Our team members work a variety of agile working patterns. Tell us what arrangement works for you and we’ll try to accommodate.

Your professional experience:

  • Experience advising digital/Internet companies on legal issues and risks
  • Experience of media law and digital content issues (privacy, IP, defamation, harmful content, acceptable use, notice and take downs etc)
  • Handling disputes (eg concerning content, platform T&Cs, consumer complaints for online goods/services, business user complaints)

  • Ability to work as part of a broad team
  • Ability to manage deadlines

  • A constructive and solutions-focused approach to work
  • Enthusiasm for delivering legal services and services alongside non-legal services lines via a non-traditional delivery model and multidisciplinary offering
  • An interest in following the rapid global developments and keeping up to date

  • Demonstrable ability to work effectively across multiple and varied teams
  • Willingness to take on responsibility, and determination to see things through and deliver to a high standard
  • Skilled at managing competing priorities and pressure
  • Team builder who recognises the importance of creating an environment in which people work together effectively and enjoy themselves in doing so
  • Ambition and desire to contribute towards the growth and success of the Internet Regulation team

Your service line: Legal

By integrating legal advisory services with our vast consulting services and tech capabilities, we’re transforming the way that we deliver unique legal services across the globe.

Personal independence
Regulation and controls are standard practice in our industry and Deloitte is no exception. These controls provide important legal protection for both you and the firm. We are subject to a number of audit regulations, one of which requires that certain colleagues abide by specific personal independence constraints. This can mean that you and your “Immediate Family Members” are not permitted to hold certain financial interests (shares, funds, bonds etc.) with audit clients of the firm. The recruitment team will provide further detail as you progress through the recruitment process.
