We are seeking a Knowledge Lawyer (PSL) to support our IP Disputes team in our Bristol, Thames Valley or London office. The successful individual will provide a high quality training and knowledge service to the IP Disputes team and the broader Disputes and Risk (D&R) practice group. The role is intended to be full-time, but we’re very happy to consider applicants looking to work part-time, 4 days a week.

The practice

Our IP Disputes team is known for acting in high profile, high value patent and other IP litigation with an international element, as well as handling brand portfolio management matters and disputes for internationally recognised brands. We are acting in litigation in the UK Supreme Court, High Court, and General Court (CJEU) on a range of matters encompassing patents, designs, copyright, passing off, and trade mark infringement.

We manage a large number of valuable trade marks for companies internationally, including clearance and registration of trade marks, maximising revenue streams and strategic issues in connection with brand management.

We act for leading companies across a range of sectors, including Harley-Davidson, Fred Perry, Toni & Guy, Reckitt Benckiser, Amgen, Facebook, Vodafone, Verizon Media, Motorola, JPMorgan Chase, Hays, Mattel and Nokia.

This is particularly the case with our Standard Essential Patents and FRAND litigation practice which is of great significance to the mobile telephony, IoT and autonomous vehicles industries, and the development of this area of patent law in the UK and internationally.

The team

The D&R Knowledge Team currently comprises the Head of D&R Knowledge supported by a Knowledge Paralegal and by the central Knowledge PA Team. The team sits within the firm’s broader Knowledge Team, led by the Head of Knowledge.

The IP Disputes team comprises five partners and 15 other fee earners, and is a growth area of our business. The team’s work comprises IP litigation (with a particular emphasis on Life Sciences and Tech patent disputes, and Retail & Consumer and TMC trade mark disputes), brand portfolio management, and IP strategic advice. We are an inclusive, friendly, open and supportive team.

The role

The position provides an excellent opportunity to join the D&R practice to focus on the provision of IP Disputes knowledge to the IP Disputes team and the wider firm and its clients, within an established and supportive Knowledge function.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Keeping the IP Disputes team briefed on relevant case law and other legal and procedural change; preparing and distributing reader-friendly and relevant internal and client alerts/bulletins/updates.
  • Supporting IP work as part of the Transformations themes.
  • Organising IP know-how sharing, including authoring and collecting external and internal know-how, storing it in Osborne Clarke’s knowledge database, and arranging and managing know-how sharing sessions.
  • Organising the IP Disputes team’s legal training programme and deliver some of the substantive training sessions.
  • Developing and maintaining an up-to-date and technically excellent collection of IP precedent documents – including sector specific precedents – following an assessment of fee earner needs.
  • Dealing with queries from lawyers across the Firm and clients regarding current law and practice.
  • Assisting in the preparation of client seminars and client training sessions and to speak at such seminars.
  • Assisting in the co-ordination and quality control, in conjunction with the Client Knowledge team, of publications/articles/press releases produced by the IP Disputes team for either external or internal publication.
  • Assisting in the delivery of knowledge projects for IP and the wider firm.

Technical skills and experience

You will have strong theoretical, practical and up-to-date knowledge of relevant IP law and practice, with suitable fee earning (or equivalent) experience gained within a leading business law firm or in-house. You will have a client-orientated approach, both internally and externally, and an enthusiasm for presenting technical legal and regulatory issues in a clear, approachable and professional way. Due to the technical nature of the work, we are looking for a Senior Associate level qualified fee-earning (or equivalent) lawyer, although we will consider candidates with more or less experience.
