Your Role and Responsibilities

The Design Research Lead will conduct independent generative and evaluative design research on multiple aspects of products and experiences across the Life Sciences portfolio and work closely with other designers and cross-functional stakeholders to create intuitive user-centered designs.

Our environment is ever changing and requires a candidate who is flexible, thrives in ambiguity, and can effectively collaborate across cross-functional groups and locations. We’re looking for Design Researchers with a passion for digging deep into user needs, identifying, and making visceral our user’s real problems. While the entire team is focused on doing what is best for the user, the Design Researcher is in many ways the “voice of the user” within our product teams. It is imperative that you not just report your findings, we need your actionable insights.

Responsibilities include:
Planning and Project Management of Research efforts – responsible for the creation and execution of design research plans to guide and inspire offerings design and development across the full life cycle

Synthesizes communicates, and applies actionable insights and experience models from design research to guide offering strategy, design and adoption acceleration

Synthesizes actionable insights and models that illuminate the experiences and needs of Watson Health target users as intellectual capital in support of the Watson Health mission

Inspires interdisciplinary teams in the design, development and execution of strategic offering design projects for IBM Watson Health

Define design research strategy and informs overall strategy and approach for offering projects and innovation initiatives

Help grow and elevate the Design Research practice in Watson Health, Life Sciences

Promotes the adoption of Design Thinking across Watson Health

Directs workshops, ideation sessions, and contributes to thought leadership across IBM Design

Builds a positive culture of experimentation, trust, creativity, and happiness in a new studio environment

Aligns studio and team with ongoing vision, mission, and strategy

Works with individuals to set goals and evaluate progress

Works as a liaison across studios to create opportunities for collaboration and and knowledge-sharing

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

Skills Required:
Be curious, inventive, questioning, open to critique and have a ton of initiative

Demonstrated ability to:
Design research methodologies including primary and secondary research, interviews, usability testing (primarily remote) and surveys

Translate research findings into specific, prioritized recommendations to improve product designs

Tell a meaningful story about the user

Written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to articulate alternative approaches and to present information

Attention to detail Required:
Bachelor’s Degree in a related field including HCI, Psychology, Interaction Design, or equivalent practical experience (Jodi to edit)

Portfolio/work samples at any fidelity including:
Information radiators such as personas, mental models, diagrams, etc.

Visualizations of complex user experiences: flows, scenarios, etc.

At least 5-10 years’ experience conducting user research with responsibilities and skills similar to the list above

Familiarity with

Behavior migration through Interaction Design

Research in product development methods and practices Agile, Scrum and Lean

Experience working on complex products with multiple user groups

Readiness to travel up to 25% annually

English: Fluent

Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise

Master’s Degree in a related field

Experience working with distributed teams, even better if you have international experience

Data analysis and statistical analysis experience

Experience with natural language processing or artificial intelligence software
