Company description

Social media has changed our society in a deeper way than most people realize. Today groups form around ideas more than location. It has been the other way around for 50k years!

This is a structural change. It affects every aspect of society, including our model of trust. This is why the world suddenly feels like it is getting torn apart. Who we trust has always been determined by communities, but online communities are different – they are larger and they transfer more information. Our brains are not equipped to handle this scale on their own.

We need to find a new model of trust. It is not only about fixing what is broken. It is an opportunity to create a better, more innovative society with faster scientific progress and equal access to opportunity for people no matter where they live.

This is why Borg exists. Our mission is to enable people to trust each other at scale.

We intend to do that by indexing the social graph of humanity and making it available to build on to anyone. We started by indexing Twitter, but soon will also index podcasts, research papers, other social media platforms (e.g. Reddit, Github) etc. and combine them together.

This is possible because we invented a community search algorithm which can accurately map communities from a single word input, such as ‘bitcoin’, ‘vegan’ or ‘tennis’. This algorithm works on existing social graphs.

Job description

We’re building the future in which internet’s information flows are defined by online communities, not the social media platforms. This is a massive challenge. It requires indexing billions of profiles across multiple platforms, finding millions of communities and serving them as structured data streams via a dynamically priced API.

We are looking for a CTO who can build the infrastructure that can handle that. As Borg’s CTO you will provide the technical vision and leadership. You will work closely with the CEO and the Heads of the other departments.

We are currently indexing ~1M profiles across Twitter, we have mapped over 50 communities (most are not published yet) and we are serving them as data streams over our API. We currently have two people working on the Engineering team and two working on the Research team. To meet our ambitions we will have to grow the team rapidly. You will define the structure for the Engineering organization and take charge of bringing in the top talent.

Commitment to decentralization

We are effectively building an aggregator of aggregators. One organization controlling it would result in a massive concentration of power. We do not want to be the next Facebook. For this reason, we are committed to gradually giving up control over the algorithm. As the CTO you will drive the technological vision for building the algorithm and, later, its gradual decentralization.

Tasks

You will be responsible for formulating and communicating technological vision, both inside and outside of the company. In order to be able to do that you need to have a deep understanding of the arrow of progress in technology and anticipate technological changes that may be relevant to our infrastructure and decentralization effort. You will translate Borg’s high level objectives into individual projects and priorities for the Engineering team.

You will define the structure for the Engineering organization and take charge of bringing in the top talent. You will mentor and motivate the technical team while maintaining the culture of excellence.

Requirements

You have demonstrated an ability to build, lead and grow highly effective technical teams. You are also highly technical yourself, you have demonstrated ability to go deep in complex, relevant engineering disciplines.

You have been a technical founder or worked closely with one to build disruptive technology. You have either grown a team from zero to at least dozens of engineers or from a relatively small organization (seed/early series A) to a growth stage (late series B and later). It is essential that you are familiar with the startup culture and you can foster it in our organization.

You have led a team, which has built and operated a data intensive application. You know what it takes to work with large amounts of data and what can go wrong. You are familiar with existing technologies, tools and platforms that you can use and you have a deep understanding of their trade-offs and best practices.

You have a good grasp on infrastructure. You are aware of strength and weaknesses of various providers and you can weigh our options. For example, if Google Cloud offered as a bunch of free credits you could quickly tell if it makes sense for us to make a switch from AWS. In your decision you would have taken the whole picture into account: what are trade-offs between Google and AWS, how much of team time we would have to allocate, what is the probability that something goes wrong and how much damage it could cause, what other projects we would have to delay etc. The bottom line is that not only you should be able to answer ‘yes’ or ‘no’, but you should be able to tell specifically at what value of credits and when would it does make sense.

You are familiar and have interest in decentralized systems design. You do not need to be an expert on this topic, but you should be following the developments in this space and be aware what solutions we can use for our needs.

You are a good communicator and a good writer in particular. You can explain complex ideas simply. You are skilled at adjusting the level of detail and simplification to your audience to maximize comprehension.

Leadership capabilities

We are a mission-driven organization. Your personal mission should be aligned with our company’s mission. This is necessary if you are to inspire passion among your team for what we are trying to achieve. You need to be able to explain to team members at every level how their work contributes to the mission. You find deep meaning at work and you can guide others to that.

You are a talent magnet. Working with you is an opportunity to kill for a young engineer. You can tell if this is the case if there are already exceptional engineers who would be ready to drop whatever they are doing to follow you into a new project.

You have an eye for talent. You can spot signs of exceptional ability where others may have missed them. You’ve found ‘square pegs’ in the past and you have mentored them to greatness.

Other things we value

  • Using precise language and insisting that others do too
  • Direct, but respectful communication style

Work setup

Our technology is currently built as micro-services powered by Docker and gRPC with most services running Python – with everything deployed on AWS.

We are a remote-first team. Most of the team is based in Europe (Berlin, London, Milan). We make our own hours, but we have our team calls during office hours in CET. We try to meet in person and work together for several days every ~3 months. Other than that the company ‘lives’ in Slack, Notion, Linear, Vowel and other tools enabling effective communication.

The job is full time permanent. We are also happy to sponsor a work visa if you would like to move to Germany. The compensation will include an equity in the company.

The Process For This Role

If you are the kind of person we are looking for you will be as picky about who you work with as we are. The person most relevant for you is our CEO, Maciek.

  • You can find Maciek’s writing on maciek .blog, the following posts are the most relevant for the work we do at Borg:
