Job Description

As an Assistant Professor of Law and Technology (or Law + Technology) you will teach the legal and ethical aspects of one or more topics such as artificial intelligence, privacy and personal data, e-commerce, robots, blockchain, social media, metaverses, digital competition, computational law, etc.

You will teach courses in our minor “Law, Ethics and Technology,” in our Master “Internet, Intellectuele Eigendom & ICT,” and/or in our Master “International Technology Law.”

Your teaching duties will include coordination activities, contributing to educational innovation, and supervising master’s theses in the field of law and technology.

You will also conduct research, both independently and in groups. You will have the space to develop your own line of research and organize events. In doing so, you will publish articles in international scientific journals, edit books and be committed to obtaining research funding.

Your duties

  • Lecturing and coordinating courses at the intersection of law and technology
  • Supervising student’s master theses on law and technology
  • Conducting scientific research and publishing articles
  • Developing and collaborating in interdisciplinary, (inter)national networks
  • Contributing to the acquisition of external funding for scholarly research
  • Developing your own line of research in the fields of law, ethics and technology
  • Organizing events for the Amsterdam Law & Technology Institute (ALTI)

Competencies

  • You are an enthusiastic lecturer and can transfer your enthusiasm well to students
  • You have a demonstrable fascination with law and technology
  • You have a good understanding of a fundamental technology functioning (e.g., AI, blockchain…)
  • You have experience in teaching in Dutch and/or English
  • You have good social and communicative skills and can work well with others
  • You are capable of interdisciplinary work and cooperation
  • You are creative and know how to translate your ideas into innovative education and research
  • You have ideas about active teaching methods
  • You have an affinity for the use of IT tools in education.

Requirements

  • You have a PhD (or at least your supervisor’s approval to defend your PhD) in law and technology or related areas with a demonstrable interest in law and technology.
  • You have research qualities that are reflected in international scientific publications
  • You have excellent communication and teaching skills and are in possession of the Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO) or are willing to obtain it in the near future.
  • You are capable of conducting independent research and teaching, but you are also a team player
  • You have a demonstrable talent for organizational tasks such as organizing events, coordinating projects, etc.

What are we offering?

A challenging position in a socially engaged organization. Depending on education and experience, the salary is between €3,821 and €5,230 (scale 11) gross per month on a full-time basis. The position is classified according to UFO profile: University Lecturer 2 and is open for 0.8 – 1.0 FTE.

The employment contract is concluded for 12 months, and in case of satisfactory performance becomes fixed.
